    As someone who recently engaged 18xx, I found that 18India had enough euro feel to pick it up pretty quickly. It eliminates to 2 big gotchas of 18xx: rusting trains and stock shenanigans. Highly recommend to anyone interested in 18xx that enjoys mid to heavy weight euro games.

    That attic was depressing but at least Trajan's in good company. Caverna, Hyperborea, Abyss, Mansions of Madness.... so many great games that fail to pass SUSD's myopic view of what a fun game full of heart is and the joy it brings to a table of friends, unless it's their table. But don't let it get you down. For every game in that depressing attic there are literally thousands of copies that make many a group of friends very happy and no youtuber can take that away from them no matter how many subscribers they have.

    18Chesepeake is another good game that is designed for beginners and more approachable. 1830 is the OG 18xx for finance. In general (and there is a lot of overlap), there are two trees of 18xx: 1) Finance focused & 2) Engineering ("best route") focused. I prefer financed focus which allows aggressive mergers & acquisitions, hostile takeovers, and even winning while going into BK. I would recommend to stay in the finance vein of 18xx, unless you like to build efficient route engines - assuming that's your thing, although 1846 is a GREAT next step that is both engineering, a little finance (no aggressive stock dumping) and just a lot of fun). Plus, GMT has a great production copy of 1846. Chicago Express is a wonderful Winsome game that's FAR "lighter" than 18xx, but still has hostile & aggressive moves. Think a "knife fight in a phone booth". I would 100% check this game out (or its sister game, American Rails). 18Lilliput is another 18xx style game with a Euro feel to it (action selection), and it's a card game. A lot of fun and far more approachable than the standard 18xx games. Lastly, I just recently kickstarted "Railways of the Lost Atlas" which is touted as a modular 18xx that looks interesting. 1822 versions focus a lot on auctions if you like that thing, and 1817 is a monster financial game, where major companies can buy companies and you can short stock. Never played, and while fascinated, I wouldn't try this on my own... Feel free to ping me if I can help out, but welcome to the hobby!

    Matt already did a review of City of the Big Shoulders, but that would be worth a try (although typically takes like 3hrs). Otherwise, the cube rail genre is 18xx lite: Iberian Gauge (I know you played this, but thoughts?) or Chicago Express / Wabash Cannonball

    I think another good starter 18xx is 18MS. It has very structured turns and doesn't rely on a player or bank bankruptcy. And then after getting a few games of Shikoku or MS under your belt move up to 18Chesapeake. It's a solid plan that has been giving gamers that follow the plan much happiness!

    I have not yet tried 1889. I started my 18xx journey with 1846. I really loved it, the stock manipulation part is slightly less cutthroat than the 1830 like (inc. 1889), but it has a lot of special "arbitrary" rules for historical accuracy. I also tried 18Chesapeake, which is a somewhat more simplified 1830, it is rather user friendly. And the other question: similar but shorter game I would definitely suggest City of the Big Shoulders (alt. title Chicago 1875), you guys had a great review of it few years back. That has the same stock manipulation / company ownership rules, but instead of building railways you develop factories, so that part of the game is more straightforward and simple, therefore revenue calculation is "a breeze", compared to a later round 18xx rev calc.

  • @TymberJ
    @TymberJ 2 дні тому

    Pretty pointless for reviews since it's long out of print, but if you're poking around TTS, 2038 is a different beast inside the 18XX genre that I find absolutely charming. As it's set in the far, far distant future of the 2030s (d'oh) the hex grid consists of asteroids that you have to prospect to identify, and your trains are mining spaceships. It adds randomness in a way that can make 18XX purists recoil, but it has the same core feel and mechanics. I do like that it can be a bit harder to get screwed by the board state, as there are no fixed routes (it's space, after all), and the private "minor" companies have great flavor and serve a key role in creating the initial board state. Worth checking out if you're exploring the genre.

    Nothing to do with this video but on episode 256 of the podcast, a phrase was said that would be perfect as your new catchphrase. It was around 41:17 in the podcast, and the phrase was "Board Games. Who knew?" It encompasses everything. Who knew it could be so much fun? Who knew it could be so mentally stimulating? Who knew it could reveal the hidden side of people? Etcetera, etcetera, etcetera.

    If you love building and running good company, 1846 and 21moon should be the next game. If you want stock manipulation and seeing someone bankrupt, go 18chesapeake with off the rail expansion or 1882.

    The hobbit was a book written for children and the LOTR wasn’t. Secondly, the Hobbit didn’t need three films, two would have done it. CJR Tolkien famously said …They eviscerated the book by making it an action movie for young people aged 15 to 25… I tend to agree. Sadly Peter Jackson who made the LOTR (a movie masterpiece) allowed it to become Disneyfied and his father despised Disney films and wrote in his will that Disney should never get their hands on the rights.

  • @jasonsample71

    Tom's question at the end is a good one: is there a better starting point? I feel like 18Chesapeake is a good starting point. This is an especially good starting point if most of the people in the group are not 18xx-perts. 1889 was my first game of 18xx, so I am partial to it. 18Chesapeake is an interesting place to start because there is a bit of forced obsolescence at the end of each round. One of the smallest trains is exported at the end of each round. This pushes the game forward. Often, new groups do not "push" the trains and move the game forward hard enough. This causes games to drag on a bit. 18MS is another good place to start. You build routes/companies in the southern US in 18MS. It is another good starter, I think. I have had the benefit of playing these games with a group of 18xx-perts. I have been able to wade into the deep end of the pool with a handful of much heavier/meatier 18xx games. They are so much fun, even if I stink at them.

    For shorter and less complex than 1889 you'd probably need to go 18XX-adjacent with cube rails games such as Irish Guage or Iberian Guage. Personally I think another great entry level title is 1846. If you want to go the other direction, I'd suggest 1862. It takes place in UK, features 3 different train types, 2 different ways to launch companies, variable setup, and to top it off a solo mode.

  • @pks-bisqp2677

    For KIND OF similar experience but much simplier without that much depth but STILL loads of fun... And much faster - go for any cube rails games. Chicago Express is considered the best out there but also Ride the Rails, Irish Gauge... There are a loads of them. However if you want to go deeper into 18xx, you might go for another 'entry' and FASTER title - 18Cheasapeek. On the other hand if you want to try something full throttle - you might consider the very original - 1830 Railways and Robber Barons, then 1849 Sicilly, and many many more. 9ne of the hardest the trickiest and most mean is 1817 I believe, whit heavy emphasise on Stock Rounds with loads of shenanigans and dirty moves on stocks.

    In real life if a company chooses to reinvest cash into the company instead of dividends, everything else remaining equal, the share price should increase, whereas a dividend payout would cause the share price to fall following the payout... I wonder why the game designers chose to implement the opposite logic in this game

    I highly recommend 1846 as your next game. It's more an operational snowball game than 1889 which will show you some of the breadth, and I find it to be consistently a gameday favorite. My personal favorite of the genre is 1882. It is also short, like 1889, but downright brutal in its train rush ("I don't have to outrun the bear, just you.") For a somewhat short but kitchen-sink experience, try 1862. I find heavy euro players really enjoy this one.
